GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE: SEP 20

Many young people feel a strong sense of injustice that the adults running society act with such recklessness when it comes to the future of human civilization.

“Adults have known that climate change has existed for years and nothing has been done. If youth are complacent, the trend will continue and our planet will die.” said Preston Bellini, an organizer with YCAT.

GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE: SEP 20

Participants in the strike will march through the streets to demand that Governor Evers declare a state of climate emergency. They are also demanding that energy provider Madison Gas & Electric (MGE) transitions to 100% clean energy by 2030, and divest from the Columbia and Elm Road coal plants.

WHAT: Youth and adults of Madison strike from school and work to demand action on climate change 

WHEN: Friday September 20t. Events are taking place from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., but most large visuals will be available at 1:00 p.m. at MGE.

WHERE: The corner of East Main Street and Blount Street & the State Capitol

VISUALS: A 20-foot-tall inflatable coal plant, concert, educational booths, local artwork, and large crowd

GLOBAL CLIMATE STRIKE: SEP 20

On September 20th, youth and adults around the state will take to the streets to demand bold climate action alongside millions of others around the globe. Building off of a historic surge in youth activism and climate-focused protests, organizers will host a statewide day-of-action to demand respective governments declare a climate emergency. 

“The climate crisis is no longer a catastrophe on the horizon, we are living in it. We’re striking because it’s already too late, ” said YCAT Executive Director, Max Prestigiacomo.

MAY 3RD YOUTH CLIMATE STRIKE

Who: Open to the public; primarily student-led.

Where: 2 E Main St, Madison, WI 53703 (Rotunda)

When: Friday, May 3, 2019 - 11:00 to 1:00

Why: A recent poll done by the Yale Program on Climate Communication and the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication found that 92 percent of registered Democrats and 64 percent of registered Republicans back the Green New Deal plan. Republicans in the State Legislature are ignoring their constituents at the detriment of millions of Americans and future generations to come. It’s clear Americans want action on climate change, the time is now.


PRESS RELEASE:

MARCH 15 YOUTH CLIMATE STRIKE

On March 15, Students from across Wisconsin will gather at Madison East High School at 11:30 and at 11:45, promptly, we’ll march down East Washington to the Capitol Building. Following the march, students will gather on the steps of the capitol on the State Street side at 12:30 where protesters will hear from Representative Mark Pocan (Green New Deal Co-Sponsor), MMSD School Board Candidate Ali Muldrow, and Juliana Plaintiff Vic Barrett.

Why: Decades of inaction has left humans with 11 years to solve the climate crisis. Students will strike to demand politicians answer the question: what’s your plan? There is no Planet B and our leaders should from this point on look at legislation through a lense of sustainability; asking themselves, how will this affect future generations to come? Students and others will be striking to make it clear that there’s no compromising on science.
